MIDI (.mid) files are a standard format for storing music. Unlike MP3 or wave files a MIDI file stores only a representation of the notes to play, rather than a digital recording of the music. This results in a file which is only a few kilobytes in size, rather than one which is several megabytes. This compactness is what makes midi files suitable for use as gallery background music.
