0066: What is Karma?

You may occasionally get a notification that a collection has been retained for manual checking. This procedure offers a small amount of protection against inappropriate material being published.

It works like this: every user has a particular karma value associated with them. New users have a karma of 20, which indicates that 20% of the time new collections will be passed automatically. The more karma you have, the less frequently you are randomly selected for manual processing up to a karma value of 95, when your collections are very rarely processed manually.

Your karma value increases by 1 every time you publish a collection without incident.

If a user publishes inappropriate content, their karma may be decreased by a moderator. A karma value of 0 signifies that every collection will be subject to manual checking - we may choose to do this if a user is a persistent offender or keeps on attempting to publish illegal material, for instance.

If a user's karma drops below zero, the account may be suspended. It is therefore in your best interests that you adult-flag the appropriate collections, and refrain from publishing content which is disallowed on Fotopic - click here to view our publishing policy.
