telephoto lens
A telephoto lens is a useful tool for making distant subjects appear bigger and therefore closer in your frame much like a telescope. Unlike zoom lenses telephotos have fixed focal lengths such as 100mm. A telephoto lens is very useful for portrait photography as it won't distort your subject's face.
TIFF
An image file format.
Tone
Tones are changes in apparent brightness of a color. (see: Continuous Tone)
transparency film
Also known as colour slide film transparency film creates positive images. This type of film is less forgiving of exposure errors and is harder to use than negative film. The high cost of slide film is often due to inclusive processing and mounting.
Trap
Trapping involves the addition of dots or pixels around the edges of an object so that you donít get white or colored gaps if the image is printed slightly out of register. This is necessary where two process colors meet but do not overlap. The trap causes a slight overlap.
TTL metering
Basic cameras are made with simple external light meters which sit on top of the camera and point towards the subject. More sophisticated cameras use internal through-the-lens (TTL) metering for more accurate results. TTL meters read the light that passes through the lens reducing the chance of unexpected exposure errors.
