Cookies: A Simplified Explanation
Basically, a cookie is a small data file stored by your browser. When you open a page on a website that uses cookies, the web server for that site sends a message or "cookie" to your web browser. Your browser stores this cookie in a text file. That stored information is then sent back to the issuing web server each time your browser requests a page from that web server, thereby enabling the web server to recognize you or your computer as a "unique user." Every time you open your browser, your cookies are pulled into memory, and every time you close it, your unexpired cookies are resaved.
Cookies are useful to websites because they allow a web server to distinguish one user from another. Additionally cookies are used by Fotopic.Net to indicate what size a photograph should be shown, how many per page, etc.
The cookie used by My.Fotopic.Net is a simple one that merely identifies your computer as a unique user. Fotopic.Net's web server tracks the pages visited on our website, but does not give us personal information about you such as names or email addresses. As an analogy, it is as if you were asked to wear a badge when you entered and each time you visited a restricted area. The badge merely identifies you as "User 221."
Although often initially set up to accept cookies, most browsers can be reset to refuse all cookies or to indicate when a web server is trying to send you a cookie. Look for the term "cookies" under your browser's help index to find out how to reset your browser's cookie preferences.
You need to enable cookies to sign into My.Fotopic, but cookies do not need to be enabled in order for visitors to view your gallery.
